Noosa Pest Management Attends Mystery Monday!

Greetings Noosa Friends and Family,

Fred was recently invited to speak on “Mystery Monday” at Trinity Presbyterian’s Preschool Program by a beloved Noosa client and friend, Carrie Query.  He spoke to Karen Berg and Renee Walker’s class of 13 brilliant children.  Thought we’d approach this month’s blog with an interview to get a good look inside what makes our Chief Bugman “tick”.

So Fred, what is “Mystery Monday”?

  • A guest is invited to speak every Monday, but the kids don’t know who will be presenting.

What did you talk about?

  • The Pythagorean Theorem…ha!  Why bugs of course.  We began with a discussion on how to tell if a creature is an insect (it has 3 body parts).
  • I let the kids know what I do on a daily basis – inspections, wildlife removal (the kinds of animals I “rescue” from unnatural environments), meeting lots of new people and helping to solve their problems!
  • Then we really had fun as I put on all the equipment that my team and I have to wear when entering a crawlspace (respirator, crawl suit, gloves, flashlight, knee pads, etc.).
  • I did bring up something they could teach their parents when they go on vacation – how to check for bed bugs!  It’s so easy, a child in preschool can do it!    They learned where to put luggage in the hotel room and where to keep it back “home”.  What their parents should look for before sleeping in a hotel room bed.
Fred, do the kids now think that whenever they see a bug, they should immediately call their trusted bugman for removal?
  • Ah, good question.  The answer to that is an emphatic NO!  In fact, I let the kids know that most insects are beneficial!  We just need to control the ones that enter our homes that could damage the structure (termites) or make us sick (roaches, rats).
So Chief Bugman, what did the kids enjoy the most?
  • It would have to be the live bugs that I passed around.  Don’t worry parents,  they were safely contained in jars!  They got a chance to check out bed bugs, bat bugs, ants and other interesting looking insects.
What did YOU enjoy the most, Fred?
  • I loved seeing their interested faces when I talked about my passion – BUGS!  It inspires me to educate.  The more kids know about insects, the less apprehensive they will be, and the more prepared they will be in their little futures.  They will also be better equipped to be good stewards of our environment because they will know not every bug is “bad”.
Ok, thanks for the catch up.  Sounds like you really enjoyed your time at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Greetings from Your Pest Control Pundit, Fred!

Many of you know me personally.  Despite all that is serious in the world, I do try to find humor in most situations.  One of my favorite movies that gets me in the holiday spirit is “Christmas Vacation”.  I just love it when Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) peeks into the prized Christmas tree to see a vicious squirrel looking at him dead in the eye, taunting him, right before he leaps out and causes mayhem.  Check out the video to see the hilarious details.  It’s funny when it happens to someone else, isn’t it?
Yes, squirrels are cute little animals, I agree, especially when they are in their natural habitat.  However, the weather has been especially warm this holiday season and these little critters are out and about in large numbers.  I’ve had record wildlife calls so far for squirrel removal and thought it would be a good idea to let you know the kind of damage these guys can do to your abode.
Squirrels love attics.  They enter by climbing trees growing next to your home.  Once they have gotten in, the chewing begins.   Squirrels can chew through wires (which cause fires), damage PVC plumbing lines (creating massive water damage), and their droppings are host to a number of diseases.  It’s just not a good situation.   Please contact Noosa as soon as you have a squirrel sighting, or you hear the little creatures wreaking havoc in your attic.  You wouldn’t want a Griswold Christmas!
Ho, ho, ho!

Noosa Bed Bug Holiday Tips!

November 30, 2011

Greetings holiday travelers!

We all enjoy this special season.  Some of us love to escape the cold and cruise the Caribbean.  The winter sports family prefers a trip to Boone, West Virginia, or the ultimate in snow fun, Colorado!  Those of us who are able to travel for the holidays are a lucky bunch.  But, the luck can easily run out with a bed bug infestation.

Here are a few tips to help get you prepared.  The dangers are real, frustrating, and costly.  For more information, go to NoosaBedBugs.com or call us at 704.499.9922.  We’re here to help!

Holiday Travel Tips

  • Headboards contain the majority of bed bugs in hotels.  Remove the headboard from the wall (it’s easy, I promise) for close inspection.
  • Inspect mattress corners, mattress covers and lamp shades next to the bed in your hotel room for infestation.  Try to put some light on the situation to make sure you can accurately see anything that may be crawling around or evidence of bed bug infestation.
  • Keep your luggage in the tub of your hotel room and do not bring luggage into your home.

I know it seems like a lot of effort, but it’s worth it!

Merry Christmas and make sure you’re listening to New Life 91.9 to get into the holiday spirit!
